Why do Rockledge homes need air duct cleaning?

Because Rockledge is one of Montgomery County's oldest and most tightly built boroughs, and the ductwork threaded through its twins, rowhomes, and older singles has often been moving dust through the house for the better part of a century. That density is a clue to the age of the housing. Rockledge grew up as a streetcar-and-rail suburb, built to put working families within a short ride of Fox Chase and the commuter lines into the city, and most of its homes went up long before central air conditioning existed. Block after block is made up of twins, brick and stone rowhomes, Victorian-era singles, and interwar foursquares and porch-front houses, with pockets of mid-century infill filling the gaps. Many of these homes were originally heated by steam radiators or by gravity coal furnaces later converted to oil and then gas — systems that never had a duct at all.

When forced air and central cooling were retrofitted into these older houses, the ductwork had to be squeezed wherever it would fit: into shallow joist bays, down former closets and chases, and through panned-joist returns, which are nothing more than open framing cavities pressed into service as return channels. Add-on second-floor air handlers were often threaded up through the walls and out across the attic. The result, decades later, is a lot of original sheet metal and improvised return paths that have never once been professionally cleaned.
