What actually moves the score
- Time since last cleaning — the single biggest factor. Ducts cleaned within ~3 years usually only ever need routine service; systems that have never been cleaned tend to carry packed buildup.
- Visible evidence — dust streaks or "ghosting" around registers means the run behind them is re-releasing dust every time the blower kicks on.
- Load factors — shedding pets, indoor allergy flare-ups, and renovation dust all shorten the sensible cleaning interval.
One honest note: a low score doesn't automatically mean "buy a cleaning" — the EPA is clear that duct cleaning is most worthwhile when there's real evidence: visible mold, pests, or heavy debris.
